The Secret Beneath the Bush
Inside the plastic wrapping was a small envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Then I looked toward the house next door.
The curtains were closed.
I took the envelope inside and opened it carefully.
There was a single sheet of paper inside.
The handwriting was uneven, as though written by a child.
“Please don’t tell Mom we come here.”
My heart began pounding.
I read the rest.
“We’re not stealing anything. We just need someone to know.”
At the bottom was an address.
It wasn’t the children’s house.
It was the address of an apartment building several miles away.
I had no idea what it meant.
Then I noticed something else inside the envelope.
A photograph.
It showed the two children standing beside an older man.
The man looked familiar.
Very familiar.
I turned the photograph over.
On the back were four words:
“Please find Grandpa.”
I immediately understood why the children had been so careful.
Their weekly walks weren’t about collecting garbage.
They were using the black bag as a cover.
Every Sunday, they were secretly leaving small notes and photographs beneath different bushes and porches around the neighborhood.
But why?..
