The Secret Jeffrey Had Been Hiding

I stared at Jeffrey.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Across his chest was a long, pale scar that disappeared beneath his shirt.

There were smaller scars along his ribs and shoulder.

I looked at him in disbelief.

“What happened?”

Jeffrey sat on the edge of the bed.

“About six months ago, I started having trouble breathing.”

My heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were already fighting for your life.”

He looked down at his hands.

“Your third round of chemotherapy was one of the hardest periods of your treatment. You were exhausted. You were frightened. I couldn’t bring myself to tell you that I was having medical problems too.”

I sat beside him.

“What kind of problems?”

He took a slow breath.

“I needed surgery.”

I stared at the scars again….
